Finding Plus-Sized Vintage
This dress is a great example of a cute, affordable plus-sized vintage dress.
I hear all the time from my customers that it’s hard to find plus-sized vintage fashions. And I’m listening! I source my inventory for real people of all sizes. And I’m very mindful that larger sizes are in demand. I don’t buy the excuses that larger people didn’t exist back in the 1960s or earlier because there’s photographic evidence that they did! I have photos of my relatives from this era, and they were large people. These people needed clothing, ergo plus-sized clothes existed in the 60s and earlier. You just have to look for them.
Clothing manufacturers have always catered to small people. That much is true. But people made their own clothes more often back in the day. And I can’t tell you how many estate sales I’ve scoured on sourcing trips where I’ve found absolutely incredible plus-sized, handmade dresses! That, to me, is a win-win because you not only have a plus-sized dress. You have a plus-sized, one-of-a-kind dress!
Preloved Kilo has a great piece on why it’s hard to find plus-sized vintage fashions.
